Experts Drive Home Hazards Of E-waste Collection For Children | Kolkata News

Kolkata: Children are used to collect hazardous e-waste as their nimble fingers can easily sort them out from other wastes, often without adequate protection. Issues like these were debated and discussed at a workshop organised by Kolkata Municipal Corporation, Child Rights and You (CRY) Foundation and Hulladek Recycling Private Limited at Harijan Gyan Mandir School near Taratala on Monday.
The purpose of the workshop was to generate awareness among underprivileged kids on child labour and hazards of informal electric and electronic waste (e-waste) management on the occasion of World Day Against Child Labour, that was observed on Sunday.
More than 60 children participated in the programme, which was inaugurated by Tapan Kuma Gupta, chief technical advisor, West Bengal Pollution Control Board; Sukumar Bar, assistant engineer, Borough -IX, KMC; Ashim Ghosh, CRY Foundation-East; Rakesh Kumar Tiwari, teacher in-charge, Harijan Gyan Mandir School, Taratala and Nandan Mall, founder and CMD, Hulla-dek Recycling.
The workshop was planned in Taratala because it has a lot of industries around the area and kids from nearby slums are often engaged in collecting e-wastes deposited from these industries. “Child labourers are the most at risk since they often handle various carcinogenic materials like lead and don’t have adequate protection,” Mall said.
The talk also focused on the plight of child labourers who are engaged by the family so that they can earn a little more money. The kids also took part in a drawing competition where they expressed their thoughts on child labour and environment through paintings.
Lakshmi Kumari Mahato, a Class-XI student, said, “Children below 18 have the right to education, but unfortunately they are engaged as labourers in various sectors, which often ruin their lives and dreams.” Nikhil Sil, another Class-XI student, feels that after this workshop, it is also their responsibility to spread awareness whenever they come across cases of child labour. Sukumar Bar too hailed the initiative.
