High Point Wants Your Dangerous Junk But Not Your IRS Forms

Everyone knows that fall is the best time to do spring cleaning and, when it comes to that hard to dispose of waste, the City of High Point is offering a helping hand to its residents.

The city will hold its next Household Hazardous Waste disposal event on Saturday, Nov. 5 at High Point’s Household Hazardous Waste Facility at 1401 E. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive.

The city is requiring “proof of residency,” so if you live in Pleasant Garden, they can’t help you this time around.  You’ll need a Real ID, a passport, two utility bills and a current High Point Public Library Card.  (Not really – a press release for the event didn’t detail what constitutes “proof.”)

From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. the facility will open for a drop-off event on Saturday, Nov. 5, for High Point residents, who’ll be able to drop off the following household items at no charge:

  • Aerosols, batteries, bleach/cleaners, electronics, fire extinguishers, furniture polish, fluorescent bulbs, nail polish/removers
  • Adhesives, gas cylinders, paints, solvents, stains/varnish, strippers/thinners, wood and metal cleaner, wood preservatives
  • Antifreeze, auto batteries, brake fluid, cleaners/degreasers, diesel fuel, gasoline or mixed gas, motor oil and filters, transmission fluid
  • Herbicides, lighter fluid, pesticides, poisons, pool chemicals
  • Electronic waste
  • Tires – though there’s a limit of four tires per visitor.

Sadly, this event won’t include the always popular paper-shredding service that’s sometimes offered at these types of events. However, Styrofoam recycling will be available.

According to city officials, “Accepted foam includes clean egg cartons and meat trays, clean foam takeout containers and cups, packing material and foam coolers.”  It adds, “Tape, bubble wrap, pluck foam, foam wrapping and foam peanuts will not be accepted.”

Also, they’re asking everyone to please make sure all loose Styrofoam is bagged.

City staff will direct vehicles through the site and unload all materials.

Disposal is for household waste only: Materials from businesses, household garbage or medical waste won’t be accepted.

Residents are requested to have the items in the trunk of their cars or in the bed of their pick-up trucks to make it easier on the collectors.

Any updates will be provided prior to the event, and you can verify the city’s event calendar atwww.highpointnc.gov.
