Kaua‘i Solid Waste offering $80k through competitive grant program : Kauai Now

The County of Kaua‘i Solid Waste Division is now accepting grant applications for projects that increase recycling and waste diversion consistent with recommendations put forward in the most recent Integrated Solid Waste Management Plan Update. A total of $80,000 is available in the new competitive grant program.

Applications are available on the Kaua‘i County website, county officials announced this week. The deadline to turn in a grant application is Friday, Feb. 10, by 3 p.m. Applications can be emailed to Keola Aki at [email protected].

Project examples include permitting of food waste composting, capturing food waste for diversion from the Kekaha Landfill, plastic processing innovations and other programs directly related to recycling and waste diversion. Grant funds are only available to non-profit organizations.

Judging of grant application will be based on the following criteria:

  • Project strength, planning, and goals – possible 10 points
  • Project impact and potential to effect waste diversion – possible 5 points
  • Measurability of project’s success – possible 5 points
  • Experience of organization in implementing similar projects – possible 5 points
  • Budget feasibility – possible 5 points
  • Total points – 30 possible

A selection committee will review the proposals and rank them according to their overall scores. The projects that are chosen for a grant award may receive full or partial funding.
