The manager of the new Onehunga Community Recycling Centre is encouraging people to think carefully about whether they need something new or if they can make do with secondhand.

The centre is run by an accredited Māori / Pasifika social enterprise, Onehunga Zero Waste, which is a partnership between community enterprise Synergy Project Trust and Localised – the commercial arm of the Zero Waste Network.

It’s part of a network of centres which aim to keep more than tonnes out of the landfill each year.

Manager Parul Sood says the centre will take items like furniture, electronic waste and glass and either recycle or upcycle them.

She says a change in mindset is needed.

“Before buying something new, go have a look at the op shops. Go have a look at the community recycling centres. You might just find that item there and sometimes it is quite retro as well and it goes really well. We just need to think about do I need something new or can I have something upcycled and repurposed,” Ms Sood says.

Onehunga Community Recycling Centre is at 37 Victoria Street, Onehunga
