Tirupur: The city corporation has launched a novel initiative called ‘Nothing is Waste’ to encourage proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste).
The city corporation organized an awareness camp at its main office on Saturday in association with NGO Thuppuravalan and the event saw more than 50 school students exchanging e-waste for money. Thuppuravalan is authorized by the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board to process e-waste.
An official said, “Students of Vriksha International School and Sri Sai Matriculation Higher Secondary School participated in the awareness camp and handed over nearly 200kg of e-waste. In addition to it, the civic body collected 780kg of e-waste from the public on the day with the help of a few more NGOs.”
By engaging the NGOs and private firms to handle e-waste, he said, the corporation could save manpower and transportation costs.
The official said the corporation was planning to create designated collection centres, where people could dispose of their e-waste safely, instead of dumping them in the open.
Corporation commissioner Kranthi Kumar Pati also conducted a virtual meeting with the district school education department officials, headmasters and college principals on the day, seeking to ensure the participation of students to make the ‘Nothing is Waste’ initiative a success.
